Macbook pro m1 max 14″ | Intel 15″ Apple’s Back to School promotion

This unboxing features the 14-inch M1 Max MacBook, purchased through Apple’s Back to School promotion. It comes with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The video also includes footage of the mid-2015 model, since these are the only two I’ve owned so far.

Let’s start with the main differences in the unboxing experience:

  1. The mid-2015 model came with a cleaning cloth and an extension cable—both of which I still use to this day. Unfortunately, Apple stopped including these at some point, probably for environmental reasons.
  2. The mid-2015 model was also the last one to feature the glowing Apple logo—what many fans called the “faith light.” I bought it as a refurbished unit in 2018.

The main reason I decided to buy it was to get smoother performance when running After Effects. I also often need to bring my laptop on the go, so a smaller size is more convenient. After comparing different options, I chose this configuration.

After using it for a month, here are the upgrades I really noticed:

  1. Lighter weight – It’s much easier to carry around, and I don’t even need to bring the charger when I go out.
  2. Silent under heavy load – Even when exporting videos or doing other performance-heavy tasks, I can barely hear the fan. On the 2015 model, just opening After Effects would send the fans spinning like crazy and the laptop would get super hot.
  3. Touch ID – Unlocking with just a light tap is fast and convenient.
  4. Power efficiency – The battery life is amazing. I don’t bring a charger with me anymore, and I’m no longer stressed about finding power outlets.
  5. Power bank charging – It can charge from my Xiaomi 20,000mAh high-end power bank through USB-C, but only sometimes. It briefly shows the charging icon and then stops. It seems like it only works when the power bank is nearly full (4 bars); below 3 bars, it doesn’t seem to charge. Still testing this one.
  6. Fast charging – With the original 96W charger, I can go from 30% to around 60% in under 30 minutes. And the old extension cable still works with it, which is great.
  7. Speakers – They’re loud and have noticeable bass. A huge upgrade over the 2015 model.
  8. Windows support – The Intel Mac could run Windows via Bootcamp, but the M1 chip requires Parallels 17 or later to run the ARM version of Windows. So far, the Windows apps I use for work all run just fine—no major issues.

Overall, it’s been all positives so far. Since I skipped several generations before upgrading, the improvements really stand out—it’s a massive leap forward 😆

My only complaint? The notch is ugly. It doesn’t affect usability much, but I still wish it wasn’t there. Without it, the MacBook would be perfect 😆
